What does a ductless Mitsubishi system cost?

Here in California replacing your heating and cooling system requires a permit. Part of the permitting process is compliance with Title 24. Duct systems have to be tested for leakage. All duct systems leak. Most leak enough that repairs or replacement of the duct system is required. When this cost is factored in the Mitsubishi system is very competitive, often less expensive than an old fashioned ducted system.

Most of the systems we install are multi-zones. That means one outdoor unit serving two or more indoor units, up to eight on a single outdoor unit. A zone will be one room or space. So each bedroom would be a zone.

A kitchen/family room might be one zone in an open floor plan. Hallways, laundries, and bathrooms (unless they are very large) are not a “zone”. Their heating and cooling loads get included in adjacent zones.

Single Zone Systems

Single zone systems, one indoor unit and one outdoor unit, start about $5,500.00 installed.

Multi-zone Systems

Multi-zone systems start between $3,500.00 and $4,500.00 per zone installed. Keep in mind that all homes are different and Mitsubishi offers several styles of equipment with multiple options. But you can lower your initial cost with a fractional installation.

Fractional Installations

One big advantage with ductless is the option of a fractional installation. You may have a large home with many bedrooms. Maybe the kids are grown and those rooms go unoccupied most of the year. In a fractional installation we install an outdoor unit with the capacity, both in btu’s and the number of required zones, for the whole home. That may be four, five, six or more zones. But you can start with as few as two indoor units on the initial installation, say maybe the great room and the master suite. We install isolation valves (about $120 per zone) to the unused ports on the outdoor unit. Those zones can be added later as circumstances change or as finances permit.  Other than the cost of the isolation valves, there is virtually no financial penalty. Fractional installations can dramatically reduce the cost of the initial installation. For many people this can mean the difference between paying cash and having to finance. Many people do this as a way of self-financing their new Mitsubishi system.

Huge Savings On Your Energy Bill

When you do the math don’t forget, you don’t finish paying for your new system when you write the final check to your contractor. You pay for it every month when you pay your PG&E or SMUD bill. Have a new high efficiency central ducted system installed and you may save 10% on your energy bill. But have a ductless Mitsubishi system installed and save on average 50%. Most of our clients’ Mitsubishi systems pay for themselves in a few years of energy bills.

And more math to consider: The average central ducted system lasts between 12 and 20 years depending on how well it is maintained. A Mitsubishi system installed by a Diamond Contractor comes with a standard 12 year warranty and these systems typically last 25 or more years. We service one system in a school kitchen in Vacaville that has been there for over 30 years and runs strong to this day.
